Andres becomes Niagara County GOP chairman as VanDeMark steps down

Niagara County Legislator Richard L. Andres Jr. of North Tonawanda was elected chairman of the county Republican Committee at an executive committee meeting Tuesday night in Wheatfield.

He succeeds Adam VanDeMark of Lockport, who became first vice chairman. James D. Heuer of Wheatfield, moved from first to second vice chairman.

Andres said he was asked to run last week by State Sen. Robert G. Ortt, the county's top elected Republican. "They wanted more stability in the party," he said. He said he intends to run for a full term at the September reorganization meeting.

VanDeMark, who became chairman when Scott P. Kiedrowski resigned in December, is a Department of Defense employee. Under federal law, he was allowed to be a party chairman but was barred from soliciting monetary contributions.
