Pitch made to bring farmers market to Eastgate Plaza in Clarence

A plan to put a seasonal farmers market in the parking lot of the Eastgate Plaza on Transit Road got a tepid reaction Wednesday from the Clarence Town Board.

James Bagioli of Benderson Development made the pitch during the board's regular meeting. He said the company has run a similar market for the past 10 years in the Tops Market parking lot in East Aurora. If the plan goes forward it would be open from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays from May 2 to Oct. 24.

Bagioli said Benderson has 25 interested vendors. He said the concrete barriers around the 120-by-200 square foot market in the parking lot would be removed at the end of each night.

Supervisor Patrick Casilio called the request for a conditional permit a "slippery slope" and said he had concerns that it could become a flea market or could expand to five days a week. He rejected the concept, but it was approved to go to the Planning Board for formal review by a 4 to 1 vote.
