Late South Area goose season opens March 2

For those looking for some late-season action to chase a Canada goose or two, March 2-10 marks the special nine-day season for the South Area of the state. The South Area extends from Niagara County south to Pennsylvania, angles through the Finger Lakes and extends along the Southern Tier into the Catskills. The daily limit is five birds per person.

The key to success will be finding out where the birds are hanging out on a regular basis. Try and figure out the timing as to when they travel and where are they coming from. When setting up shop, proper camouflage is essential. For those using a lay-out blind, use brush that’s immediately from the areaand match yourself to your surroundings. For more information on the boundaries and other regulations pertaining to Canada goose hunting, consult the state’s website at www.dec.ny.gov.
