Millionaire romance scam ends in guilty plea

A romance fraud targeting men and women who used resulted Friday in a guilty plea by a resident of Ghana.

Jason Osei Bonsu, one of two men charged in the fraud, admitted playing a role in a scam that victimized a local woman, a highly paid, white-collar professional in her late 50s. The woman lost an estimated $718,000.

Bonsu and others, according to court papers, used a fake online persona, Marvin Roecker, to romance the victim and ultimately cheat her out of money.

Bonsu's plea before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara is the result of a prosecution by Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott S. Allen Jr. and an investigation by the FBI.

She thought it was love. It was a $718,000 fraud
