Western New York college basketball may not have ever seen a pair of guards like St. Bonaventure’s dynamic pair of Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley.
After a pair of 40-plus point performances in three previous games, Adams turned over some of the scoring load to Mobley Tuesday night in a 79-68 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over La Salle at the Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia.
Mobley scored 30 points and Adams added 26 in the Bonnies’ seventh straight victory which raised their record to 19-6 overall and 9-4 in the conference.
Between the two, Mobley and Adams made 20 of 36 shots and nine of 17 from three-point range. They also were 7 for 8 in free throws. They each played the full 40-minute route.
Adams went into Tuesday’s game averaging 20.2 points while Mobley was averaging 18.0.
Bona took the lead for good, 24-21, on a three by Adams with 7:40 to play in the first half and led 42-32 at the break. Still, they could not shake off the Explorers until they built a double-digit margin with about five minutes to go and it stood up.
Sophomore guard Saul Phiri was mainly responsible for keeping La Salle in it. He finished with 22 points. La Salle scoring leader B.J. Johnson picked up three first-half fouls and was held to 10 points, half his average. Pookie Powell had 15 points for La Salle.
Second-place Bona took a half-game lead over third-place Davidson in the A-10 standings behind Rhode Island (12-0). The Bonnies and Rhody will meet at 7 p.m. on Friday night at the Reilly Center. The game is a sellout.
