A short ceremony to honor veterans will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday – Valentine's Day – in Freedom Hall, Room 301, in the VA Medical Center, 3495 Bailey Ave.
For the 40th consecutive year, the nationally syndicated column started by Ann Landers, now called “Annie’s Mailbox,” has devoted a column to the National Salute, asking readers to send Valentine cards and letters to hospitalized veterans. The Salute offers VA’s and communities a chance to honor veterans with special visits, cards and mementos during their hospital stay or outpatient visit, organizers said.
"During National Salute, we salute men and women who have paid and continue to pay the price of freedom,” Michael J. Swartz, interim director VA Western New York Healthcare System, said in a statement. “Valentine cards with heartfelt messages made by local school children are being displayed and given to our veterans to thank them for what they have done for our country in the past and support them in the challenges they face today."
