East Amherst woman suffers serious head injury in Niagara Falls crash

A 22-year-old East Amherst woman riding in an Uber suffered a serious head injury in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday night in Niagara Falls after which the driver of the other vehicle was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, was a backseat passenger in a car that struck a van that turned in its path at the intersection of John Daly and Rainbow boulevards, Niagara Falls police said. The woman was listed in stable condition at Erie County Medical Center.

The driver of the Toyota Camry she was riding in, identified by police as a 30-year-old Buffalo man, was not injured. His name also was not released. The Toyota driver was operating his vehicle for Uber, the ride-hailing service.

Douglas R. Hammond, 55, of Rochester, was identified as the driver of the Ford Econoline van who turned in front of the other vehicle. He was charged with DWI, second-degree vehicular assault and failure to yield the right of way on a left turn. Hammond was scheduled to be arraigned in Niagara Falls City Court on Thursday morning.
