City of Tonawanda Common Council searching for a First Ward replacement

The City of Tonawanda is asking any interested First Ward resident to submit a letter of interest to fill Councilman Charles Gilbert's seat.

Gilbert was appointed administrative assistant to the mayor on Tuesday and in view of this, he will resign his seat on the Council, effective Friday.

According to a city ordinance, vacancies in any elected office are expected to be filled by the Common Council by its next regular meeting, which in this case would be Feb. 20. In the case of a tie vote, the mayor will cast the deciding vote.

Currently the mayor and three of the four remaining Council members are Democrats. Gilbert, a Republican, ran unopposed for a fifth term in November.

Letters of interest should be submitted no later than Feb. 16 to the City Clerk,  200 Niagara St., Tonawanda.
