Port Colborne industrial fire sends smoke trail over WNY

Smoke from a large industrial fire at a vinyl company in Port Colborne, Ont., could be seen this morning in Buffalo.

Its trail extended above the Northtowns.

Ontario radio station CKTB, 610 AM, reported this morning that the fire was at Vinyl Works Canada on Barber Green Drive at Concession Road in Port Colborne.

The report said voluntary evacuations were underway this morning and firefighters were asking residents nearby the keep their windows closed.

Reports from the Welland Tribune said the blaze broke out after 7 a.m. today. It was still raging shortly before 10 a.m.

The Tribune said the black smoke was suspected to be generated from burning vinyl siding. It was believed that all of the plant's employees got out of the building unharmed.
