Amherst wants Verizon to adjust its plans for cell tower near park

Amherst Supervisor Brian J. Kulpa has reached out to Verizon Wireless to see if the company will consider a different location – or a different technology – for the 92-foot cellphone tower it proposes building near Garnet Park.

Kulpa said during and after Monday's Town Board meeting that he wants to know more about the company's wireless network in that area and whether building the tower at another site or erecting a micro tower would meet Verizon's needs. He contacted the company Friday and has not yet received a response.

Verizon plans to build at 3671 Sheridan Drive on land owned by Public Storage. Some neighbors of the project, which received a waiver from the town Zoning Board of Appeals, filed suit to try to block the tower. They lost in state Supreme Court last summer but are appealing that decision.
