Flea market vendor is victim of tag-switching scammer

A vendor at Gordie Harper's Bazaar in Newfane told police that thousands of dollars worth of items have been obtained through subterfuge  from his booths in recent weeks, with many of the items being offered for sale on a pair of online websites.

The victim told sheriff's investigators that he has been finding price tags from his items scattered about the Lockport-Olcott Road flea market. Someone apparently has been removing his tags and replacing them with lower-priced tags from other booths at the market, to buy the expensive collectibles for a fraction of their actual value.

The thief then turns around and offers the items for sale on websites like Craigslist and Offerup, according to reports. Police are currently investigating $1,700 worth of stolen items – 76 in all – that are being actively offered for sale online by a man identified as a Lockport resident. An investigation is continuing.
