METZGER, Richard Edward

METZGER - Richard Edward 89, of Buffalo, NY and Naples, FL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at home surrounded by his family. Funeral Services will be arranged at a later date. Richard was born on September 22, 1928 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Edward J and Dorothy (Stocker) Metzger. Richard served his country as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, C. Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, F.M.F. U.S.M.C. On March 18, 1950, he was united in marriage to Dorothy J. Styres in Buffalo, NY. Richard was a retired Buffalo Police Officer and Desk Lieutenant. He served at the Buffalo community in this role for 31 years, from 1952-1983. As a huge fan and supporter of sports, Richard was a general manager, coach, member and fundraiser for the Buffalo Regals Hockey Association. He was known for his love of football and being a loyal Buffalo Bills fan. Richard was a dedicated baseball fan and coach. He enjoyed going to Seacrest Country Day School, in Naples, to watch the Stingrays team play, as well as coaching his children and watching his great-grandchildren play. Richard and Dorothy enjoyed many years of camping and traveling from Buffalo, NY to wintering in Naples, FL. They have shared great joy spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their later years. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Styres); sister, Leila Mahoney; 7 children, Donald (Mary Lou) Metzger, Donna (Rick) Maisano, Karen (Bob) Metzger-Michael, Kenneth (BG) Metzger, Thomas (Beth) Metzger, Kathleen (Frank) Kreppel and Dawn Metzger; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family friends. Richard was predeceased by his parents; brother, Donald; son, Keith, and Keith's first wife, Deborah (Krienheder) Metzger. In lieu of flowers, donations to AVOW Hospice of Naples or a scholarship through Folds of Honor, in memory of Richard Edward Metzger, are greatly appreciated.
