Buffalo man rescued from burning SUV on QEW

An unidentified Buffalo man was pulled from his burning sport utility vehicle Saturday after a spectacular crash on the Queen Elizabeth Way near the Gilmore Road exit in Fort Erie, Ont.

Truck driver Darren Martin of St. Catharines said he saw the Oldsmobile Bravada go out of control about 9 a.m. It ran into a ditch, returned to the pavement and became airborne.

"His car probably flew a good 50 feet in the air and barrel-rolled three or four times," Martin said.

Fellow trucker Jeremy Hager of Burlington, Ont., and motorist George Bailey of Toronto pulled the conscious but stunned driver free as Martin used an extinguisher on a small fire burning through the floor of the SUV. Martin said the man was taken to Greater Niagara General Hospital.
