Police seek shoplifting suspect who bolted from custody

A shoplifting suspect was being sought Wednesday by City of Tonawanda police after the man bolted from the custody of store personnel.

Police secured video stills of the suspect who, around noon Wednesday, entered a Rite Aid store at 47 Niagara St., and stole beverages and car care products, according to police.

Police said the man, who was briefly detained by store personnel, announced “don’t call the cops, I’m on probation.” He then broke free, exited the store and got into a late 1990s white Pontiac before driving onto the sidewalk and taking down a street sign. The suspect headed from the City of Tonawanda into North Tonawanda.
