After just three weeks of fishing action, Capt. Bob’s Outdoors in Clarence has already posted some impressive catches from its popular fishing contest. Here are the leaders in the various categories so far:
Perch – Jim Stoll of Eden is setting the pace with a 14-1/2-inch perch from Lake Simcoe with fishing with second place leader Mark Mohr of Springville, who entered a 13-1/2-inch fish.
Walleye – Peter Goretti of Buffalo is currently in first place with a 29-3/4-inch upper Niagara River fish that weighed in at 11.9 pounds. He caught it on a jig/swimbait with a plastic minnow. Second place is Evan Walsh of Lancaster with a 27-3/4, 9.9-pound walleye from Silver Lake, caught on a Kastmaster spoon.
Steelhead – Pat Hilkey of Lockport is in the lead with a 28-3/4-inch fish caught on a jig in the Oak Orchard River. After a quick picture it was released. Second place is a 27-3/4-inch steelhead caught by Sam Giglia of Williamsville while fishing the lower Niagara River. It, too, was released.
Crappie – Matt Bedient of Lockport is first place with a 14-1/4-inch fish caught on a jig and spike. Second place is Mike Rinallo of Amherst with a 13-1/4-inch fish caught on a custom jig.
Bluegill/Sunfish – Matt Bedient of Lockport is tops so far with a 10-inch fish and Bob Frost of Alden is second with a 9-3/4 inch panfish.
Northern Pike – Matt Bedient of Lockport came through with the big one this past week when he reeled in a 41-1/2-inch fish through the ice on 2-pound test line. It was chasing a bluegill that he had caught. Second place is Mike Cian of Clarence with a 33-inch pike caught on a rosy red fathead minnow.
There are no entries for Rudd or Lake Trout yet. The contest continues through March 15.
