Lackawanna man accused of killing buck with crossbow from his bedroom window

A Lackawanna man baited a backyard with cracked corn to lure in deer and then shot and killed an 8-point buck with a crossbow from his bedroom window, state Department of Environmental Conservation officers reported.

Police found the dead deer in a backyard near Boland Drive on Jan. 9, according to the state officers. There was also about 50 pounds of cracked corn on the ground in the backyard, the agency said.

James R. Mikac, 57, faces several charges including taking deer out of season, killing deer in an area where hunting is prohibited, hunting deer over bait and unlawfully feeding deer. If convicted,  he could face fines of up to $4,500 along with court surcharges, the DEC said.

Authorities believe the deer was shot Jan. 8. Mikac is scheduled to appear in Lackawanna City Court on Feb. 13.

Mikac was charged in 2011 with illegally taking two deer in Lackawanna, according to the DEC, but there's no public record available regarding the disposition of those charges, according to an official at Lackawanna City Court.
