The $8 million sale of the convent of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in Hamburg to Catholic Health System has closed.
The sisters will remain living in the convent at 5229 South Park Ave., while the remainder of the 40,000-square-foot LEED platinum-certified building is to be converted to about 40 market-rate apartments for senior citizens.
"The idea is the sisters could remain in their home, living independently, as they always have," said Chuck Hayes, director of marketing and communications for Catholic Health System.
Smaller than the original 1927 motherhouse located across South Park Avenue, the convent reflects the order’s commitment to “care for all creation,” and was constructed in 2010 to be environmentally friendly and sustainable.
The new name of the building is St. Francis Park.
