Beer notes: Big Ditch, Rusty Nickel, Pizza Plant

A nod to Scotland

Big Ditch Brewing Company (55 E. Huron St.) has released its latest beer, Balnamoon strong Scotch ale. The 8 percent ABV (alcohol by volume) beer is named after a small town in Scotland that is also the ancestral home of one of its brewers. It is brewed with a lightly fruity scotch ale yeast and a hefty dose of orange peel, which blend nicely with the rich malt flavors of caramel and raisin.

Big Ditch also has announced its spring seasonal in cans, which will be its Beautiful River Belgian-style saison. The 5.6 percent ABV saison features refreshing floral, pear and pepper notes. The beer is a mainstay on tap at the brewery, but this is its debut in cans, which will be sold in 12-ounce six-packs for $9.99 at supermarkets, retailers and the brewery’s tap room beginning around Jan. 30. Beer and chocolate

Pizza Plant (7770 Transit Road, East Amherst) will host its annual Belgian Beer and Chocolate Fest at 7 p.m. Feb. 13. The beers from Ommegang include Siren Song, Ginnipen, Gnomegang and Rosetta. Chocolates will be provided by Chow Chocolat. Call 632-0800.

Newest from Pearl Street

Pearl Street Grill and Brewery (76 Pearl St.) has released its newest beer on tap, The Black Pearl. The 6.8 percent ABV black IPA features Simcoe and Chinook hops. Call 856-2337.

A Hometown Hero

Rusty Nickel Brewing Company (4350 Seneca St., West Seneca) has released Hometown Heroes IPA, the last in its installment of Football Series IPAs. The 5.8 percent ABV beer has tropical mango and pineapple flavors, along with citrus and peach, and was brewed to celebrate the success of the West Seneca West football team.

A Valentine pairing

Rusty Nickel presents its Valentine’s Day Beer Pairing Dinner from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Feb. 14. This year the dinner will be in collaboration with Jaz & Jack’s restaurant. Tickets are $54 for bar seats or $60 for normal seating (available at eventbrite.com).

Cash bar will open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner beginning around (but not before) 7 p.m. The menu has not yet been released, so stay tuned to the brewery’s Facebook page for announcements. Call 608-6155.
