Council approves plans for Outer Harbor attractions

Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp.'s vision for the Outer Harbor got the green light to proceed from Buffalo's Common Council.

The plans include creating a bike path featuring one mile of dirt trails for entry to intermediate level riders, a four-acre events area – called "The Great Lawn" – at the southern end of the Outer Harbor, and a viewing overlook to be built north of the grassy field.

There also will be habitat enhancements, including the creation of a large pollinator meadow with plants that attract butterflies.

The Council approved the state agency's plans Tuesday. Construction is expected to begin by Memorial Day, with the new trails and habitat improvements expected to be completed in a year.

Next up for Outer Harbor: more trails, new festival spot, a lot of butterflies
