Barber shops, salons offer blood pressure screenings

Adults 18 years and older in Erie County can get a free blood pressure self-screening at six beauty and barber shops as part of a preventive care initiative by Millennium Collaborative Care and the National Witness Program.

The shops are: Metropolitan Style Shop, 1395 Jefferson Ave.; Sean’s House of Masters, 295 E. Delavan Ave.; Head Quarters Design Studio, 1016 Kensington Ave. #5; Heaven Sent Barber Shop, 1016 Kensington Ave.; Black Butterfly, 2560 Main St.; and Amanda B Hair Salon, 1241 Hertel Ave.

The objective is to raise cardiovascular health awareness in a comfortable and convenient location. Each business is supplied with a small digital blood pressure monitor that patrons place on a wrist to record blood pressure, as well as with health information.

Millennium Collaborative Care is part of a statewide effort to reform the Medicaid program, and the National Witness Program focuses on health education to African-American women.
