Target shooting on frozen Chautauqua Lake leads to arrest

Ice fisherman on Chautauqua Lake reported shots were being fired recklessly over the ice Sunday morning, the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office reported.

The call, one of two complaints from Mayville reporting gunfire in the vicinity of Sea Lion Drive, came into the Sheriff's Office just before 9:30 a.m., deputies said.

Deputies arriving at the scene located an Ohio man and numerous others at a residence on Sea Lion, which runs parallel with the lake shore. They determined that weapons owned by Matthew Michael, 20, of Brook Park, Ohio, were being fired at targets placed on the lake.

Michael was taken into custody, charged with reckless endangerment, and released with an appearance ticket.
