Animal cruelty charged after 72 pigs are seized from farm

Cattaraugus County officials seized 72 pigs Saturday from the property of an Ashford man and a nearby property and charged him with animal cruelty for allegedly failing to provide sufficient food, clean water, space and medical treatment for the animals.

The pigs in the worst condition were taken for medical care to Cornell University and Farm Sanctuary of Watkins Glen. The rest of the pigs will be taken to local rescue farms, said sheriff's deputies, who rescued the pigs along with the Cattaraugus County SPCA.

Gerald Nason Jr., 56, was charged with animal cruelty and violating agriculture and market laws after the raid at his property at 5119 Folts Road and a neighboring property at 5109 Folts Road, deputies said. The arrest followed complaints from neighbors and an investigation.
