Another Section VI team tournament has been added to the roster and the question as to which boys golf squad is the best among the public schools in the area will now have a thorough answer.
Section VI will crown a team champion during its annual individual boys individual golf championship tournament/state qualifier May 21 at River Oaks on Grand Island, according to section chairman Nate Leary.
In addition to the standard number of individual golfers who qualify for sectionals from ECIC, Niagara Frontier League, Niagara-Orleans League, CCAA I, CCAA East II and CCAA West II, the six teams that win their respective league crowns will make up the field for the 18-hole team championships.
Orchard Park will represent ECIC by virtue of winning the league's team championship tournament in October.
Niagara Wheatfield and Medina captured the Niagara Frontier League and Niagara-Orleans League championships, respectively, and also will be in the event, along with the CCAA I, CCAA East II and CCAA West II champions.
The CCAA teams play their season during the spring.
Each squad will designate five players for the team sectional match with the four best scores from each team counting toward final score. The team that completes the round in fewest strokes earns the title.
The scores for golfers from team champions who also qualified as individuals for sectionals will count toward the state qualifier portion of the event. The state qualifier remains a 27-hole event for individuals with a cut line after 18 holes.
As of now, the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association doesn't appear to be planning to add boys golf to its team championship roster. Leary hopes that changes in the future, especially considering the NYSPHSAA did add a team championship for girls golf this year.
