Margaret H. Eison, active in Buffalo’s Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church for more than 65 years, died last Friday in Round Rock, Texas, where she had lived for the past few years. She was 96.
Born in Waterproof, La., the oldest of three children, former Margaret Harris attended school in Tallulah, La., and came to Buffalo in 1948 with her aunt. She married Norman Bennie Eison in 1951 and was the mother of five children.
At Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, she was a member of the No. 2 Usher Board for more than 55 years and served as chaplain for the board.
She was active with the Church Ushers Association on the local, state, regional and national levels. In the Church Ushers Association of Buffalo and Vicinity and for New York State, she was a chaplain and assistant chaplain, an instructor in the School of Ushering and a member of the Alumni Department. She often led devotional services for the Great Lakes Ushers Association.
A mentor to young people, she was a Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years. She also was a member and group leader of the Baptist Training Union and a leader of Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
As a member of her church’s Stage and Restoration Committee, she was known for her acting ability in numerous church dramatic presentations.
Her husband died in 1994.
Survivors include three daughters, Johnnie Marie Jackson, Elizabeth Thompson and Benethia Holmes; a son, Bennie; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 665 Michigan Ave.
