Islamic Society plans expansion at Getzville center, mosque

The Islamic Society of the Niagara Frontier plans to expand its mosque and religious center in Getzville.

The organization received approval from the Amherst Planning Board Thursday for a proposed two-step expansion of the 18,500-square-foot Islamic Center at 745 Heim Road, just west of Hopkins Road.

The work would add about 8,300 square feet of new space and take place in two phases. Improvements include an addition to the mosque prayer area, an expansion of the multipurpose space, a new conference room and modifications to a classroom and women's bathroom. The project would add 80 parking spaces to the 153 on site.

Society representatives held two meetings with neighbors in the past six weeks and made modifications to the landscaping and location of some parking spaces to address concerns.
