Unions to host commemoration of MLK's legacy Monday night

Local unions are joining together to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday evening.

The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, along with the Service Employees International Union (1199 SEIU) and the Western New York Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO will host the event from 5 to 7 p.m. at the offices of 1199 SEIU, 2421 Main St.

Organizers see the event as a chance to counter recent public displays of racist rhetoric, saying "Together, we can keep the dream alive."
Speakers will be the Rev. Terrence Melvin, International President, CBTU; the Rev. Mark Blue, president, NAACP Buffalo; and Richard Lipsitz, president, WNY Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO.
