ELDER, Dr. Ruth Gale

ELDER, Dr. Ruth Gale

ELDER - Dr. Ruth Gale Dr. Ruth Elder, retired associate professor at the University at Buffalo School of Nursing, passed away on December 16, 2017. She was 93. A native of London, Ontario, Canada, she received a bachelor's degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1950, Master's from Yale University in nursing in 1960, and Doctorate from Yale University in sociology in 1968. She was a committed educator at UB from 1968 to 1989 and included stints as Associate Dean and Acting Dean of Nursing. She was involved with the education of nurse specialists and nurse practitioners since their beginnings. Ruth's career included teaching stints at Yale and the Ottawa Civic Hospital and nursing at the Victoria Hospital in London where she started her education. She retired in 1989. In retirement, she and Winnifred Humphreys, her partner of 57 years, spent their winters in Naples, FL, and the rest of the year in Williamsville. She enjoyed good company, discourse, food and music. She continued to be well read and supported progressive causes and as a naturalized citizen took the electoral process seriously. "Ruthie" will be missed by her friends and (adopted) family. She is an ongoing supporter of education through bequests to Western, Yale and UB (where there is a nursing research award in her name) and was a long time supporter of NPR, PBS, the Southern Poverty Law Centre, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A private remembrance service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by AMIGONE FUNERAL home, inc. Share condolences online at
