Greek Orthodox Church begins new year with blessing of waters at Niagara River

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church will begin the new year with a blessing of waters at the Niagara River.

The tradition of Epiphany will be celebrated on 1 p.m. Sunday  at Broderick Park at the foot of Ferry Street.

The ceremony commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. The water of the Niagara River will be blessed as the Jordan River was in ancient times, signifying when Jesus was baptized as man. During the blessing of the waters, the priest will immerse the sacred cross into the water and raise it.
