Former Bills DE Aaron Maybin raising money, awareness about lack of heat in Baltimore schools

Former Bills defensive end Aaron Maybin is helping bring attention, and some funding, to Baltimore public schools, where he is a teacher.

Maybin, a Baltimore native, has tweeted several times in the last two days about heating issues in Baltimore schools, including a video tweet that includes some of his students complaining about the cold, accompanied by his text of "This.Is.Unacceptable."

A gofund.me effort to raise money for space heaters and winter coats was at just over $8,000 at around 9 a.m. Thursday morning. Just after 3:45 p.m. today, it had reached over $25,000, well beyond its goal of $20,000.

Maybin's story has attracted attention from Yahoo! Sports and SB Nation.

Here are is initial tweets on the issue:

Maybin was a disappointment for the Bills after being selected 11th in the 2009 draft. After two disappointing seasons, he was waived by the team in August 2011.

He is widely considered one of the worst Buffalo Bills draft picks of all-time (he's in the top 10 of our Mark Gaughan's list), and part of the infamous 17-year playoff drought that concluded Sunday.

Tim Graham detailed Maybin's story, including his passion for art, in a 2015 feature story.
