Weather closes City Hall early, tax deadline extended

City Hall employees were sent home, and the building was closed at 3:30 p.m. today because of blizzard warnings for Buffalo and northern Erie County.

Erie County government's downtown offices were also closing early, with closing times staggered to help prevent traffic tie-ups for workers leaving downtown, city officials said.

All state, county and city courts in downtown Buffalo also closed at 4 p.m. today because of the weather.

In City Hall, Michael J. DeGeorge, a spokesman for Mayor Byron W. Brown, noted that city tax bills were due today. However, because of the bad weather and early closing of City Hall, the deadline has been extended until Wednesday.

City officials also asked motorists to avoid using South Park Avenue if possible. With the Skyway closed in both directions, traffic on South Park Avenue is heavy, and motorists are urged to find alternative routes,  DeGeorge said.
