Wyoming County sheriff releases few details in shooting that injured 3-year-old

A 3-year-old boy was shot and wounded in his family's home on Tooley Road in the Wyoming County Town of Bennington early Saturday, the county Sheriff's Office reported late Monday, but few other details are being released.

The child was struck in the chest and shoulder by a bullet from a .45 caliber handgun, the report said, with the shooting called in by the boy's mother shortly before 8 a.m. The dispatcher instructed the mother in emergency treatment until help arrived and the boy was taken by ambulance to Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo, arriving at 9:05 a.m.

The boy, whose name has not been released, survived surgery.

The child "came in contact with the loaded handgun in the living room," according to a news release from Sheriff Gregory J. Rudolph, who said the gun is registered to the boy's father.

The shooting was determined to be accidental, and the case is being handled by the sheriff's Criminal Investigation Division to determine if any criminal charges are warranted.
