Hotel guest suspects identity theft in illicit use of Apple account

A man using his smartphone Sunday afternoon on a hotel Wi-Fi reported the loss of $4,450 in fraudulent electronic withdrawals, police said.

The man, who was staying at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo, told police he and his son were in the lobby using their smartphones around 12:30 p.m. Sunday when they were approached by a person acting suspicious, police reported.

After a brief conversation, the man hovered nearby, and police believe he may have remotely and electronically stolen the victim's personal information, the incident report indicated.

Hours later, the hotel guest reported three gift cards were purchased on his Apple account totaling $4,450.
