RYAN, Eleanor Margaret
RYAN - Eleanor M. Passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 19, 2017, surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Ellie was born in Galeton, Pennsylvania on January 26, 1924 to Matilda and Frank Scarcello. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Floyd, a sister, Elvera and brothers, Peter and Frank. She attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, majoring in Home Economics - a subject she later taught in both Troupsburg and Dalton, New York. She worked for a summer at the Chautauqua Institute, although no one seems to have heard much about that. She married Floyd Warren Ryan of Dalton, son of Floyd W. Ryan, Sr. and Maude (Lynde) Ryan. Ellie and Floyd raised four children in Dalton, one son and three daughters. Eleanor was a lifelong Catholic attending Holy Angels Church in Nunda, New York before her snowbird years in Rushford Lake, New York and Bonita Springs, Florida. She had many friends in each of these towns. She was a remarkable homemaker and spent a lot of time baking, cooking, sewing, knitting and later in life, quilting. She very much enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, and her daughters often spoke of hearing the laughter emanating from downstairs long after their bedtime. When the card table was not being used for a card or board game, you would often find a jigsaw puzzle being assembled there. Many will miss Ellie's kind heart, graciousness, gentle disposition and warm smile, qualities which allowed her to continue making friends, even as words were leaving her. She is survived by her son, Jon Gary Ryan and daughter-in-law, Valerie (Watkins) Ryan of Lake City, Florida, daughter, Barbara Jane Ryan and son-in-law, James Muldoon of Geneva, Switzerland, daughter, Sheila Ann Ryan and son-in-law, J. Robert Young of Brooklyn, New York and daughter, Diane Lynn Ryan of Baltimore, Maryland; five grandchildren, Jennifer Ryan-Furfari (Peter Furfari), Melanie Sue Ryan (Walter Webert), Ryan Thomas Muldoon (Laurette Jullien), Kayla Ryan Young and Evan Michael Young; and four great-grandchildren, William Webert, Ivan Furfari, Dana Furfari and Neo Muldoon. The family is planning a Memorial Service to celebrate the life of this wonderful woman at her beloved Rushford Lake, New York on Saturday, July 21, 2018. Contributions, in her name, can be made to Caritas House Assisted Living, Baltimore, Maryland 21227.
