NIAGARA FALLS — A man who had listed his personal cellular telephone for sale online was robbed of the phone Friday night by a man who threw him five counterfeit $100 bills in "payment."
The victim, a 35-year-old Buffalo man, told police a woman contacted him to purchase the phone, asking him to meet her in the 400 block of 10th Street. He arrived around 9:45 p.m. and was approached by a man. The victim then told police he heard about four gunshots and jumped in recoil, at which time the man grabbed the phone from his hands, threw the bogus money at him and fled to a nearby alleyway, where he was believed to have been picked up by a waiting car.
The victim told police the man who robbed him did not appear to have a weapon, and that he was not harmed in the incident. He valued his phone at $799, but told police he was trying to sell it for $500.
