The Grand Island Town Board agrees the town needs a community center, with a gym and meeting rooms, but has debated for months on how to get there.
Supervisor Nathan D. McMurray asked the board to consider hiring an engineering firm to draw up plans for bidders, while Councilman Raymond Billica said he would prefer making a sketch and a list of ideas and leaving the planning up to those interested in bidding on the project.
The board approved Billica's proposal by a 3 to 2 vote on Monday. Billica said parties already have approached him to submit plans. The board agreed to accept proposals through Feb. 15.
Billica said the board is under no obligation to accept any proposal that does not meet the town's specifications for costs and/or location.
