Thomas Biersbach was Hamburg police officer

Thomas A. Biersbach, a retired Hamburg police officer, died Sunday from lung cancer at Elderwood Nursing Home. He was 70.

Mr. Biersbach was born in Buffalo and was a longtime Hamburg resident. He graduated Frontier High School in Hamburg, and served in the Army as a military police sergeant stationed in Germany.

After the service, Mr. Biersbach worked for the Hamburg Town Police, retiring as a detective sergeant in 2001. He was named Officer of the Year in 1984 after apprehending two burglary suspects.

Mr. Biersbach also received the Michael J. Dundon Service to Youth Award in 2004 for work with local school systems.

He was a member of the Hamburg Police Benevolent Association and involved in the Police Athletic League. Hockey, softball, bowling and golf were all sports he enjoyed playing, and he was a member of the Southtowns Golf League.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Jane Reali; a daughter, Janine Giannicchi; a son, Scott Biersbach; and two brothers, Ronald and Mark.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Lombardo Funeral Home, 3060 Abbott Road, Orchard Park.
