The annual first hike of the year at Allegany State Park will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 1.
The self-guided hike starts at the Red House picnic area. Participants are asked to start at the picnic shelter to sign in, pick up a trail map and a winter scavenger hunt sheet, and then make their way along the marked trail past Red House Lake, out to the Arboretum and Butterfly Meadow and finally to Camp Allegany, where the Friends of Allegany State Park will provide hot drinks and warm food from noon to 2 p.m.
Hikers who want to go the extra mile can continue to historic Bova Ski Area.
Weather permitting, snowshoes and trekking poles are encouraged. For more information call 354-9101.
