Tens of thousands of Erie County pistol permit holders need recertification

Roughly 50,000 Erie County pistol permit holders are at risk of losing their permits if they do not recertify their firearms by the end of January.

Anyone who gained their pistol permit prior to Jan. 15, 2013 must recertify their weapons with State Police, said Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns in a joint press conference Thursday with Sheriff Timothy B. Howard.

"I understand there are many people who disagree with and are frustrated with the NY SAFE Act," said Kearns. "However, with the deadline fast approaching, I do not want to see any citizen lose their pistol permit because they did not re-certify their license."

The Clerk's Office in County Hall has 20 computer stations with a direct link to the pistol permit re-certification website. Hard copies of the state’s re-certification form are also available at the county auto bureaus.
