Wait! Don't order that gift until Friday!
Free Shipping Day begins one minute after midnight Friday. For 24 hours, hundreds of retailers will offer free shipping on all orders, and promise to ship them by Dec. 24.
There are 840 confirmed retailers signed up so far, and more will be added until the event goes live. The roster of participating stores is expected to grow beyond 1,000. Many stores are corporate chains and e-commerce retailers, but some are local, such as Cats Like Us, a clothing store in the City of Tonawanda.
All Free Shipping Day participants will offer a minimum of free shipping on most items. There may be some exceptions for large items at the retailer's discretion, and a few offers may be limited to a specific collection of merchandise on the retailer's site. In most cases though, shoppers can expect free shipping on everything.
The one-day event began in 2008 with 250 merchants. By 2010, it had earned more online sales than Black Friday and, a year later, broke the $1 billion mark.
New to the list this year is Gap Brands, which brings free shipping from Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta; joining such retailers as Sur la Table, Land's End and Free People.
