An elevator will be coming to the Grand Island municipal building by the fall 2018.
Town Supervisor Nathan McMurray said Grand Island has received $100,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds for the $300,000 project. The balance will be paid for by the town.
McMurray called the current accessibility at the 1960s-era town hall, "a barrier for democracy."
Most visitors to the building, either for court or for board meetings, drive to the parking lot at the rear of the building and then face a winding staircase to the second level. There is an entrance to the second level from the front of the building, but McMurray said the parking is far from that entrance.
"This is something we all agreed was needed," said McMurray. "To be proud of this building it has to be accessible."
