WITHERSPOON, Benjamin G., Jr.
WITHERSPOON - Benjamin G., Jr. A native of Buffalo, NY, passed away peacefully in his home. He is survived by his children, Benjamin III, Greg, Cherisse, Kim, and Bruce; many grand and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara, daughter Carol, and wife Shirley. Ben was an US Army veteran, athlete, businessman, Medaille College alum, and Erie County retiree. Ben's love for track and field began at an early age and his outstanding athletic career continued through his military service. His commitment to excellence earned him top awards as he competed in various track and field events at Emerson High School and continued at UB where he won outstanding athlete of the year award; setting records in the 100 and 200 yard dashes, broad jump, and high jump as a freshman. Ben joined the army in 1954 as a Medical Corp Instructor, where he also earned the inter-service gold medal for the triple jump in 1955. In both 1955 and 1956, Ben was invited to represent the USA Olympic team in Melbourne, Australia. Ben retired from the Erie County Department of Social Services as a Child Support Investigator. He previously held the position of Supervisor of Erie County Rodent Control within the Health Department. Ben's children would like to thank his family and friends who have expressed their condolences and provided support during this time.
