Letters: Immigrants are welcome, but they must do it legally

Immigrants are welcome, but they must do it legally

I take exception to a letter writer recalling a time when America welcomed immigrants. When immigrants came over to America, they all had a common stop. Remember Ellis Island? They were questioned, examined, immunized, registered and at times quarantined. Then, they went to work. Building streets, subways, buildings, etc.

Now, the first stop is NOT Ellis Island, it is the Department of Social Services where they sign up for health care, housing, food assistance, language training, shopping skills, child rearing skills and I can go on.

There is no problem with immigrants coming to America the right way (legally), I just don’t want my fellow citizens coming over by jumping fences, running through a field or in the trunk of a car.
