The path for local amateur boxers hoping to reach the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions starts Jan. 28 with the first round of the New York State Golden Gloves Tournament at Buffalo Riverworks.
The tournament will be held over the course of five monthly dates with the others being Feb. 24, March 18, April 8 and May 6.
Ticket prices for the first round range from $25-45 if purchased in advanced, $30-$50 at the door on fight night. Advance tickets can be purchased at ticketfly.com, Doris Records or Carubba Collision.
The Golden Gloves is open to males and females and consist of divisions for sub-novice-, novice- and open-level boxers. Open Division state champions advance to the national tournament May 14-19 in Omaha, Neb.
The Empire State actually has two Golden Gloves tournaments: one for New York City area boxers in the Big Apple and the Buffalo competition one, which serves as the state tournament for everyone else. The Buffalo location is expected to draw boxers from Western New York, Central New York and the North Country.
