SUVs replacing sedans as Chautauqua County sheriff's patrol cars

Sheriff’s patrol cars in Chautauqua County are getting a new look.

Sheriff Joseph A. Gerace announced Wednesday that the first vehicle with a new color and graphics design has been put on the road.

The new patrol vehicles are black and gold Ford Interceptor Utility SUVs, replacing the red and white Chevrolet Impala sedans the department has used for more than a decade. Gerace said that Chevrolet has stopped offering the Impala as a police vehicle.

Gerace noted that the SUVs provide more space for equipment, especially for deputies who are emergency medical technicians. He added that they also are all-wheel drive. The old patrol cars won’t disappear immediately, however. They will continue in service until the entire fleet is gradually replaced, Gerace said.
