The Erie Canal sport fishery lost a champion last week. Steve Harrington, 69, of Gasport died unexpectedly Nov. 29 while he was deer hunting in the town of Hartland.
The former Lake Ontario charter captain devoted his last 27 years organizing the popular Erie Canal Fishing Derby held each summer from the Niagara River to Albion in the Erie Canal. He put a large amount of time and energy into this special event, affecting thousands of people along the way.
The popular family-friendly fishing contest was his focus for the year, pulling together an impressive list of sponsors, establishing the weigh stations and developing the promotional materials and website. The plans are for the family to continue with the event to honor Steve moving forward, led by his wife, Lynn, and granddaughter Stephanie.
Dates are tentatively set for July 4 to 15, 2018. Harrington will be sorely missed by the angling community but his legacy will live on.
