Soulful Christmas celebration is Saturday in heritage corridor

The Michigan Street African-American Heritage Corridor is sponsoring its third annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Soulful Christmas holiday celebration on Saturday, starting at noon. This year's theme is the celebration of African-American holiday traditions. Events will be held in the Michigan Street Baptist Church, 511 Michigan Ave., and Pilgrim Baptist Church, 665 Michigan Ave.

A Soulful Christmas reflects the blending of African and American culture and heritage. It includes Kente Claus, an Afrocentric Santa who wears Kente cloth from Ghana and portrays a Caribbean, African-American and African interpretation of Christmas. The celebration also includes the Tradition Keepers storytellers, gospel choirs and caroling, a holiday village and marketplace, and a tree lighting at the Michigan Street Baptist Church at 4 p.m.
