Dec. 7 – Special after-hours VIP event at Orvis Buffalo, 4545 Transit Road, Williamsville from 6 to 8 p.m. to assist with Christmas shopping. Door prizes, snacks and drinks. Call 276-7200 if questions.

Dec. 7 – Birding Unity Island Riverwalk from 10 a.m.-noon. Preregister by calling 585-457-3228.

Dec. 9 – Open Archery Shoot at Hawkeye Bowmen Archery Club, 13300 Clinton St., Marilla from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. weather permitting. Open to the public. Crossbows not permitted. Cost is $5 for practice range and select 3-D targets. For more information contact Nadine Fulle at 427-9076.

Dec. 9 – North Forest Rod and Gun Club Shoot N’ Hoot program will shoot off-site at Wolcott Guns, 3052 Walden Ave., Depew from 1-3 p.m. on the archery range and 3-D bow simulator. Contact Colleen Gaskill by Dec. 5 at 628-9023.

Dec. 11 - Niagara River Anglers Association Christmas meeting at the Sanborn Farm Museum, Route 31, Sanborn starting at 6:30 p.m.

Dec. 13 – Niagara County Federation of Conservation Clubs annual Christmas Meeting at the Hartland Conservationist Club, 3606 Orangeport Road, Gasport starting at 7 p.m. Bring a dish to pass.

Dec. 14 – Weekday Winter Birding Hike with Buffalo Audubon’s Tom Kerr in Joseph Davis State Park from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Preregistration required. Call 585-457-3228.

Dec. 14 – Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Association’s annual Christmas Party Meeting at 4-H Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport, 7 p.m. This is a joint meeting with the Niagara County Fisheries Development Board.

Dec. 14 – Erie County Federation of Sportsmen’s Club will hold its monthly meeting at Bison City Rod and Gun, 511 Ohio St., Buffalo. Board meeting at 6:30 p.m., general meeting at 7 p.m.

Dec. 15 – Hike Down Hunters Creek Gorge. Join naturalist Mark Carra with Buffalo Audubon into the gorge at Hunters Creek County Park from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Minimum age is 13 to participate. Preregistration is required at 585-457-3228.

Dec. 16 – North Forest Rod and Gun Club 5-Stand Winter League starts, ending on Feb. 24. 50 targets weekly. Shooting takes place from 9 a.m.-noon on Wednesday, 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Call Kevin Gaskill for more info at 628-1375.

Dec. 16 – Buckhorn Island Bird Bonanza at Buckhorn Island State Park, Grand Island from 10 a.m.-noon. Search for waterfowl along the river with state parks staff. Register by calling 549-1050.

Dec. 17 –Knox Farm Christmas Bird Count, Knox Farm State Park from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Call 549-1050 to register for the program.

Dec. 17 – Winter Wonder Photography Walk at Niagara Falls State Park from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. with a park naturalist. Call 282-5154 to register for the program.

Dec. 17 – Final day, South Area Canada goose season

Dec. 19 – Erie County Fisheries Advisory Board Meeting at Bison City Rod and Gun Club, 511 Ohio Street, Buffalo starting at 7 p.m.

Dec. 23 – Home for the Holidays Sporting Clays Shoot at North Forest Rod and Gun Club, 6257 Old Niagara Road, Lockport. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. Shooting from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (last squad). This will be a 50-bird sporting clays shoot, European start. $15 fee for 50 birds, $20 for Lewis option. Call Bryan Meahl for addition information or to register at 628-6238.

Dec. 23 – 118th Annual Christmas Bird Count. Call Beaver Meadow at 585-457-3228 to register. Birders of all ages and experience levels are welcome.

Dec. 26 – Duck and goose seasons reopen in the Western Zone for ducks, West-Central and South areas for go

Dec. 30 – Niagara Rapids Birding with Buffalo Audubon’s Tom Herr at Goat Island, viewing gulls and waterfowl. Meet at Lot No. 3. Preregister by calling 585-457-3228.

Dec. 30 – Fur Handling Seminar by the Erie County Trappers Association at the Collins Conservation Club, 2633 Conger Road, Collins from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call Patti at 337-2556 for more info. Free to attend.

Dec. 31 – Beaver Island Blizzard Bash at the Beaver Island Nature Center from 10 a.m. to noon. A snowshoe hike along the Niagara River. Call 549-1050 to register.

Jan. 1, 2018 – Lake trout season opens in the lower Niagara River and Lake Ontario in New York waters.

Jan. 1, 2018 – New license year in effect in the Province of Ontario waters.

Jan. 1 – NYS Winter Classic Fishing Tournament through Feb. 28. Seven species categories. Open water or through the ice. Check out www.nyswinterclassic.com for details.

Jan. 14 -- Start of winter trap and 3-D archery leagues at Alden Rod & Gun Club, 12 County Line Road. Trap will be 50 birds scratch and shoot every other Sunday. Archery will be a 3-D indoor shoot the same dates. For trap, call Tom Ess at 431-9292; for archery call Phil Williams at 553-7445.
