New housing project now open; accepting apartment applications

People Inc. recently opened the doors to its new, integrated housing project — Highland School Apartments — located on 105 Highland Avenue in Tonawanda.

The adaptive reuse project included substantial rehabilitation of the two-story former Highland School into an integrated residential community.

The building had been vacant in the City of Tonawanda since 2009, and fills an important need in the community. People Inc. Highland School Apartments brings together a diverse group of people, including those with disabilities and the general public who are 18 years and up and income eligible.

The building includes 35 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom handicap adaptable apartments. The apartment kitchens include appliances, plus a dishwasher.

The building was modified with safety features, a community and activity room, on-site laundry facilities, storage in each apartment and a 24-hour on-call emergency service. Tenants are welcome to have one small pet. A bus route is nearby and the location is accessible to a number of services and stores.

Apartment applications are being accepted. To learn more or to arrange a tour, email housing@people-inc.org or call 716-880-3890.
