Panama's Ireland earns Excelsior Award honor from state

Jerry Ireland of Panama received the eighth annual Excelsior Award from the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association. He was presented with the award during the state girls volleyball final four in Glens Falls last month.

According to the release from the state, the award goes to a member of the Civil Service Employees Association in a New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association school "who has helped promote and foster athletic spirit in their local school district as well as display extraordinary dedication and support of high school athletics in New York State."

Ireland has done that during his tenure at Panama – from encouraging students to take part in sports whether it's as an athlete or spectator. He announces football games during the fall and runs the scoreboard for the girls volleyball team. In the winter, he runs the scoreboard for the boys and girls basketball teams. He's also first base coach for the softball team and serves as travel coordinator for teams that reach championship games.

“This award came as a complete surprise to me,” Ireland said. “I would like to thank Panama Central Schools for their support and especially Chrissy Smith for nominating me for this NYSPHSAA/CSEA award. I am very honored.”
