Protecting Lake Ontario camper sites could disturb wetland, DEC says

A state freshwater wetland will be disturbed, but some Lake Ontario shoreline residents could get some relief through a fill to protect a campgrounds, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The DEC announced today it tentatively determined that 20,000 cubic feet of fill can be used by the owners of the Willow Beach Campground in Porter in order to prevent flooding of camper sites at its 1809 Lake Road property.

"The project will raise the level of grade of the southern side of the existing camping lots to equal the lake-ward side of the lots," the DEC stated.

The agency intends to see comments from the public before making a final determination on whether to issue a permit.
